My First Spanish Weekend

After a pretty epic fourth, the party bug didn’t cease to bite.  Friday night we went out to a salsa club on the port, and I must say, it was pretty amazing.  People of all ages were out on the floor, and everyone seemed to know exactly how to salsa! Now I absolutely can’t wait for salsa lessons tomorrow night at Havana!  After the salsa club we headed out to el barrio to meet up with some friends.  We bar hopped for a while, eventually ending back on the port at a club in the casino.  The night was alive with music and dance at 4am, and my friends and I couldn’t help but take it all in, so much so that we didn’t get home until 6am as the sun began to rise.  I had to be up by 9:30 the next day to go to el mercadillo, kind of like the Spanish version of a farmers’ market.   Even though I was dragging, I managed to buy a new pair of sandals, as mine had mysteriously snapped on the beach.  It just goes to show that nothing, not even less than 3 hours of sleep, can stand in the way of a woman and comfortable footwear.  The mercadillo itself had tons of fresh produce and discounted clothing.

After another nap (much needed) I awoke just in time for dinner (I swear, my life REVOLVES around food).   We had chicken and something called “langostinas”, I think they were the equivalent of krill or crawfish.  Following dinner, I was well-rested enough to begin another night on the town.   I met up with some friends and once again, Alicante was our oyster!  The highlight of the evening was La Quinta Avenida, a discoteca that opened at 3am.  My friend Alex and I danced like crazy for a while before meeting up with a few others from our group.  After many photos and sufficient amounts of shenanigans, we ended up walking into our homes as the sun rose at 6:30am.

I got a bit more sleep than last night, waking up at noon, but by 2:30 I was off to San Juan with my friends Ashley, Kyle, and James.  The beach wasn’t too crowded and the water was absolutely the perfect temperature.  After a weekend full of dancing and fiestas, a relaxing day at the beach was exactly what we all needed.  Can’t wait to see what the next week brings J.  So much has happened already, but there’s so much more to explore in this amazing city!  And believe me, I’ll let you know what I find! Until then, keep calm and no pare la fiesta! (don’t stop the party).
